Lymphatic Drainage

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a gentle and rhythmic massage technique designed to stimulate the lymphatic system, a vital part of the body's immune system responsible for removing waste and toxins. MLD is performed by a physiotherapist trained in MLD (Vodder and Leduc techniques) and involves specific hand movements that encourage lymph fluid to move through the lymphatic vessels.

This non-invasive therapy can be used to support the treatment of various conditions, including lymphoedema (swelling due to a blockage of the lymphatic system), post-surgical swelling, inflammatory disorders and immune system dysfunction.

MLD is also highly beneficial for people having aesthetic or cosmetic surgery, such as liposuction, tummy tucks or facelifts.

What are the benefits?

Lymphatic drainage massage supports the healing process after many procedures, including abdominoplasty, fat remodelling, liposuction, breast augmentation or reduction, and breast reconstruction.

For those having several procedures at once, such as a “mummy makeover” involving liposuction, a tummy tuck, lifts and remodelling, lymphatic drainage massage is even more essential. Combined procedures often cause discomfort, swelling and bruising, which can compromise lymphatic flow and lead to complications such as fluid pockets and scar tissue formation.

Lymphatic drainage plays a pivotal role in recovery from surgery by:

  • Facilitating detoxification
  • Reducing swelling and bruising
  • Promoting healing
  • Reducing fluid pockets and scar tissue formation (fibrosis)
